Lions Crush Century 48-7 and Advance In the Play-offs — Next Up? Middletown!

The first playoff round has been completed for the Maryland 2A championship. Walkersville took on an 8-2 Century, a team Walkersville has never played in the playoffs. It was a cold night but that didn’t stop Walkersville from scoring 48 points and moving on to the second round with a 48-7 thrashing of the Knights.
The first quarter Walkersville’s defense but the work on Century, and caused a three and out. Walkersville offense now had a turn to score. They pushed down the field with their ground and pound scheme, and eventually number five Chad Gleason ran in a 15 yard touchdown. Later in the quarter after Walkersville forced another punt on Century. Number 22 Jacob Wetzel ran a huge 52 yard run, and then 18 yard run to set up a Ty Littleton three yard rushing touchdown. Walkersville made some great defensive plays at the end of the quarter including a forced fumble Tyler Gleason, a fumble recovery by Canden Krenzer, and a interception by Aaron Janke.
In the second quarter it was all Wetzel. At the beginning of the second quarter he popped a 23 yard rushing touchdown. Later in the second after interception by number 87 Kyle Daggett, Wetzel had another big 48 yard rushing touchdown.Finally his third rushing touchdown was after a fumble recovery by the special teams. This touchdown by Wetzel was 27 yards. At the end of the second quarter Walkersville patented no fly zone caught their third interception of the half when Ty Littleton dove and picked off the ball as time expired. Lions lead 34-0 at halftime.
In the second half Walkersville didn’t stop there; they kept pushing their way down field, and eventually Walkersville scored again. This time it was Ty Littleton with his second of the game. Later in the second half Walkersville defense/special teams struck again when number four Patrick Pope caught the fourth interception of the game and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown, making the score 48-0. However in the fourth quarter Walkersville eventually gave up a touchdown in the last two minutes with a big 80 touchdown. So the final score was Walkersville 48 Century 7.
Overall in this game Walkersville’s run attack was simply flawless. Big runs throughout the entire game. Great goal line push, and just scored multiple touchdowns. On defense Walkersville was on a new level. This was the best I’ve seen them play since the Oakdale game when the Lions had five interceptions. Walkersville’s defense caught four interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one touchdown. The defense surpassed expectations once again.
“We came out playing great; we play hard all game, and we practice all week. We need to improve on intensity throughout the entire game” said senior Kyle Daggett.
“We have Middletown next week, so we got to play harder than we did this week. We need to improve on few things, but we played great all around,” said junior Josh Polce.
“The offense was spectacular. Jacob Wetzel and Ty Littleton jist dominated — unstoppable. The defense was even better! They caused six turnovers, and just kicked their butts all over the field,” said senior Garrett Allen.
Walkersville does have a tough matchup next week at home against Middletown. It was only last week when the Lions beat Middletown 27-3. This game is going to be an important one with a chance for the state title on the line. This will a battle for the,ages. Come out next week at Walkersville at 7PM
